Shades of Progress

The market's mood swing today coincided with a rare phenomenon in New York: collective happiness. The Knicks, newly crowned NBA champions, rolled up Broadway beneath a blizzard of ticker tape and decades of accumulated hope. At City Hall, Mayor Zohran Mamdani presented the team with keys to the city and remarked that grit, tenacity, and teamwork defined both the Knicks and New York itself. It was difficult to argue. For one afternoon, the city suspended its usual hobby of complaining and simply enjoyed the view.

Tomorrow brings Juneteenth, a reminder that America's story has always been one of unfinished chapters eventually finding their conclusion. At the same time, the Obama Presidential Center continues its march toward opening, another monument to the peculiar American habit of turning history into both reflection and aspiration.
